TMEIC equipment reduces coal-fueled power plant Greenhouse Gasses

TMEIC Motors and Drives power a large CO2 Capture & Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Project.

ROANOKE, Virginia. (March 29, 2017)
– TMEIC has supplied motors and drives for an important CO
2

capture project in Texas, built to reduce greenhouse gasses flowing into the atmosphere from power plants. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor International Corporation supplied technology, design, procurement, construction, and compression equipment to the WA Parish coal-fueled power plant in Texas, where CO
2

is separated from a portion of the flue gasses that previously would have been emitted into the atmosphere.

The carbon capture project is owned by Petra Nova, a joint venture with NRG Energy, the power plant owner, and JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration.

Using a large TMEIC 28,700hp Synchronous motor with 13.8kV Soft Starter system based on TMdrive-MVG2 voltage source inverter, the captured CO
2

gas is compressed in the world’s largest integrally geared CO
2

compressor and sent through an 80 mile pipeline to the West Ranch oil field near Victoria, Texas, where the pressurized CO
2
and water is injected more than mile down into the oil wells to enhance the oil recovery (EOR), and ultimately the CO
2
is sealed underground (sequestered).

The Department of Energy is supplying a portion of the funding from the Clean Coal Technology Program. In addition to the large pipeline compressor motor at the power plant, TMEIC has supplied six MV variable frequency drives to power pumps at the oil field. These 4,000 volt AC drives provide 2,250 hp to the variable speed motors, and can run the motors at variable speeds up to 3,600 rpm to control the oil recovery process. This part of the project was engineered by Electro-Technical Industries of Houston.

The project has been in operation since December 29, 2016.
